In cellular service there are two main competing network technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). According CDG.org, CDMA networks support over 270 million subscribers worldwide and have been the dominant network standard for North America and parts of Asia.
GSM.org tallies up their score at over 1 billion people in over 130 countries. The number of mobile subscribers in the EU is enormous and 81% of EU citizens now have a mobile telephone. In a number of Member States the mobile subscription rate is close to 90%. Also, Europeans who are frequent travellers are using their cell phones abroad almost as often as they do in their own home country. But the high level of the international roaming prices has made this very expensive. This high cost contrast sharply with the much lower tariffs applied for domestic calls.
So what are the alternatives?
When travelling, remember you may be able to influence the level of roaming charges by selecting the most suitable network upon which you are roaming. Typically, your home operator will automatically guide you to roam on a specified partner network – but this may not necessarily be the cheapest option for you. Always try to use off-peak rates, which can be considerably cheaper. Off-peak rates apply on weekends and on weekdays in the evening, typically after 7 p.m.If you need to make calls to other countries, a GSM carrier can offer international roaming, as GSM networks dominate the world market. If you travel to other countries you can even use your GSM cell phone abroad. To really use a cell phone abroad like you do at home and not need the salary of an investment banker, you will want to rent a local prepaid SIM. By renting a SIM card with minutes and a local number in the country you are visiting, you can make calls against the card to save yourself international roaming charges from your carrier back home. CDMA phones that are not card-enabled do not have this capability.
Unlike typical cellular phones in the US, GSM world cell phones do not come with phone numbers programmed into them and the actual service is not even tied to the phone itself. Instead customers activate their mobile phones by popping in so-called SIM cards, little thumbnail sized devices that determine your cell phone number and any additional services like voicemail.
A pre-paid SIM card for each country you visit, gives you a local phone number and local calling rates are usually a low 25 cents/minute. It is easy, convenient, and relatively inexpensive for you to call other people in the country you’re visiting. It will also save money for the people phoning you within the country. Your number will change while you are away but you will only pay local rates for your outgoing calls. This will be significantly cheaper if you need to make calls within the country you are visiting. But be aware that phoning your home country in such a way will be charged at international rates. Best of all, Incoming calls are FREE regardless of where they originate. One of the most unpleasant elements of roaming is the charge for receiving calls. Operators make extremely high margins and the end result for consumers is that they have to pay excessive prices for receiving a call. High prices for incoming calls are an important limitation to consumer and business mobile communications. For many consumers, this is a primary reason for changing a number and renting a SIM card of the foreign operator.
There is always the option of buying a SIM card for each country, however this will be very costly compared to international cell phone renting and SIM rentals.

VOIP offers so many benefits, primary of which is tremendous savings in the monthly phone bills. But the question that many ask is will people end up using VOIP instead of cell phones? While nobody can deny that cell phones are indeed extremely useful as is proved by the near total market penetration of the cell phone industry, yet VOIP mobiles can indeed cut telephone costs immensely.
Many people get portability with their VOIP service as they may fix their adaptor in anyplace that has a broadband access and make calls. But as the service is dependant on the reliability and the quality of the internet connection, it is rather a drawback.
Many wonder if there is a viable market for wi-fi VOIP phones. Indeed there will be many who would welcome this on account of the obvious reason, saving nearly 50% on the monthly phone bill. Many cell phone companies have addressed the situation by producing dual-mode phones that can be used as regular cell phones which can seamlessly convert into a Wi-Fi VOIP phone too.
Wi-Fi VOIP is enabled within wireless networks that are activated by what is known as a “hotspot”. A hotspot is an area where you find an access point to establish the connection to the network. Mobile users can pick up signals from hotspot to hotspot as they travel within the various network access points.
Some firms have gone ahead and produced completely VOIP mobile phones. This must be welcome news to customers as mobile phone call minutes will definitely become more pocket friendly with mobile VOIP services. This is because they use free radio spectrum and internet instead of investing in large expensive towers, thus they cost less. The reason why many wireless carriers are afraid to venture into wi-fi VOIP is that their landline service will suffer.
VOIP mobile phones are relatively inexpensive to use as other products of VOIP technology. It is technically cheaper to submit audio as data packets over the Internet with less bandwidth. The compression technology is improving so the voice quality is becoming better with less noises or intrusions.
About 200 US cities have made it clear that they will introduce many wi-fi Hotspots free of charge. There are some concerns that wi-fi may replace broadband and traditional phone line services. Well, when that day comes, the customers will benefit getting not only extremely affordable rates but quality service too, that is why they may opt for using VOIP instead of cell phones. -

Mobile phones have even become the timepieces as people are more likely to check the time in their handsets. This device calculates, wakes people up, and reminds them of all occasions and appointments.
Many of mobile phone models feature FM receivers and the user can just turn on the music to be calmed while traveling or driving. (Just don’t make a call while driving!) One of the most remarkable values of mobile phones is during emergencies, may it big or small. We never know when we or our loved ones may need to make an emergency phone call. In situations when finding public phone is difficult, mobiles are the answer to your need. These devices are also very functional for businesspeople and trading companies because they can easily get in touch with their clients.
Both SMS and calls are exploited by business people to market and promote their products. Through mobiles, one can do finances updates and banking these days. They help find out the latest news through text messages sent by means of subscribing to certain services. There are mobile phones that provide you the information such as names, number, and even the exact map of who is calling you.
Mobiles are of use to the elderly and handicapped, as well. Like for example, the visually impaired have their “talking mobile phones” wherein they can read the text messages. These special talking mobile phones are feature phones installed with software to make it “talk”. Since the unit talks, the visually impaired can read his messages without having a sighted person read it for him.
Mobile phones also provide the user the confidence to get out and go places because they know they can avail assistance if needed. The cost of the mobile phones is similar to other models of communication.
