how is BT eggplant different from the regular variety?
Filed under: BT;2 CommentsIn India,"bt brinjal" hitting the table soon ,is hot news. And the name Monsanto & ‘bt’are associated with it.Some sections of the Indian society are up in arms against the introduction of GM foods into the country.
The real advantage for these genetically engineered crops is that they do not require pesticides to grow. The plant itself resists the bugs without having to spray a chemical to kill the pest. I would personally rather have a new gene in my plant than a layer of nasty chemical pesticides all over my food and environment.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a type of bacteria that produces toxins poisonous to predators like beetles and caterpillars. Bt crops are plants that have been genetically modified to carry the genes from this bacteria which, when expressed, produced this toxin. The crops therefore are resistant to these insect predators.
